Pearce heralds Brazil after seeing his team outclassed

MIDDLESBROUGH: Stuart Pearce said Great Britain had been beaten by the favourites for Olympic gold after seeing his side outclassed by Brazil on Friday.

The South Americans strolled to a comfortable 2-0 win in a one-sided warm-up match in front of a 25,000 crowd at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium.

First-half goals from Sandro and Neymar, the game’s outstanding performer, underlined the gulf between the sides less than a week before the start of the Olympic football tournament.

Pearce’s side launch their campaign against Senegal at Manchester United’s Old Trafford on July 26.

They were given a lesson by the visitors, and the coach admits the hosts are playing catch-up in their bid to produce a home success in the London Games.

“We knew how good Brazil would be,” conceded Pearce, the former England international.

“They’re an outstanding side. We now understand the magnitude of the task ahead, because whoever beat Brazil will earn the gold medal.

“We know we need to come to the boil before next Thursday and beyond.

“Brazil have probably been preparing for the Olympics for the last two or three years. We’ve come through two games now and we’re getting used to playing with each other.

“We’ve got five or six training sessions before the Senegal game. It’s a steep learning curve.”

It was a full directors’ box as Premier League scouts flocked to see the visiting South Americans, rather than the crop of top young British talent, in a star-studded line-up largely expected to carry Brazilian hopes when they host the World Cup in two years’ time.

Brazil coach Mano Menezes did his best to play down their chances of claiming gold in the Olympic final at Wembley Stadium on Aug 11, insisting: “It’s too early to talk about medal candidates at this stage. Some teams are more prepared than others.

“It was a good workout for us, but we’re not worried about sending out messages to our rivals before the tournament. This was more about gelling together as a team.”

After Sandro broke the deadlock early on with a looping close-range header, Neymar scored from the spot 10 minutes before the break after Manchester City’s Micah Richards needlessly impeded Hulk.

It is one of football’s more surprising statistics that Brazil have never won Olympic football gold.

But with Neymar, Chelsea-bound midfielder Oscar and Hulk all putting in eye-catching performances, their billing as pre-tournament favourites could not be denied.

Indeed, were it not for a fine display from Team GB substitute goalkeeper Jack Butland, the visitors’ margin of victory would have been even more handsome.

In a rare bright spot for the hosts, Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge came through 45 minutes in his efforts to prove his fitness after being struck down by viral meningitis.

Pearce, who reported no fresh injury concerns, can call on a replacement up to the July 25 deadline.

He added: “We’ll see how Daniel settles down overnight. The plan was to give him 45 minutes and we’ll see how he is.” — AFP

Equipe GB 0 Brasil 2: jovens Pearce ultrapassado como Neymar e Sandro iluminam o Riverside

Team GB 0 Brazil 2: Pearce’s youngsters outclassed as Neymar and Sandro light up the Riverside

It was the first glimpse of a Great Britain Olympic football team for more than 50 years, but most eyes were on the boys from Brazil at the Riverside Stadium.

If the pre-Olympic friendly was, in some ways, a throwback to the days when Brian Clough was banging the goals in down the road at Ayresome Park, the accent was just as much on the future, as Brazil paraded some of the household names of tomorrow.

Spot on: Neymar doubled Brazil's lead from the spot halfway through the first halfSpot on: Neymar doubled Brazil’s lead from the spot halfway through the first half

MATCH FACTS

Great Britain: Steele (Butland 46), Bertrand (Sinclair 49), Richards (Dawson 74), Tomkins (Caulker 46), Taylor, Cleverley, Allen, Giggs (Ramsey 63), Rose, Bellamy (Sordell 64),
Sturridge (Cork 46).

Booked: Richards.

Brazil: Rafael, Da Silva, Thiago Silva, Juan, Marcelo (Alex Sandro 80), Sandro (Danilo 85), Romulo, Oscar (Lucas 68), Hulk (Ganso 68), Neymar, Leandro Damiao (Alexandre Pato 74).

Subs not used: Neto, Bruno Uvini.

Goals: Sandro 12,Neymar 35 pen.

Attendance: 18,000

Referee: Clement Turpin (France).

Predictably, they were too good for Stuart Pearce’s side, as  Sandro and Neymar gave Brazil a 2-0 first-half lead and the latter player, in particular, began to exhibit the full range of his extravagant skills in the second period.

There were some encouraging moments for Pearce, as Joe Allen shone in midfield and Micah Richards went close with an early header. The most encouraging point of all, though, may just be the realisation that his side will meet few, if any, better sides than Brazil when the tournament itself begins.

Seldom can a pre-season friendly have generated such interest, with the first appearance of a GB Olympic football team since 1960 being beamed live across the nation by the BBC and a 20,000-plus crowd packed into a stadium bathed in late-evening sunshine.

It is unlikely too many have boasted such an expensive array of talent, either, with the market value of the Brazil team alone conservatively estimated at above £300million.

At least four of them are prime targets for some of the bigger spenders in the Barclays Premier League, with Ganso, Lucas, Hulk and Leandro Damiao all attracting interest and drawing a larger than usual turnout of scouts to Teesside. With Oscar also agreeing to join Chelsea for £25m, Pearce’s side looked to be up against it.

As the first half unfolded, though, it was a potential domestic transfer that appeared to make most sense. Liverpool’s former Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers is doing his utmost to lure Allen to Merseyside from South Wales, and it was easy to see why as the busy midfielder squared up to Neymar more than once and came out on top each time.

Refusing to be taken in by a typically elaborate Neymar trick in only the fifth minute, the  22-year-old earned cheers all round, as the most coveted talent in Brazilian football lost possession and resorted to fouling the GB midfielder.

If Allen was making the most of his opportunity to shine, the mere sight of Daniel Sturridge leading the attack was just as heartening, following his recent bout of meningitis. He looked none the worse for it, either, as he gave his marker Marcelo the runaround with a turn of pace that looked as destructive as ever.

GB could hardly hope to keep the shackles on Neymar, though, and after blazing carelessly over with just Jason Steele to beat in the sixth minute, he began to make his mark.

Taking charge of a free-kick that two of his team-mates were showing an interest in, his  12th-minute delivery from the right flank curled invitingly across the edge of the six-yard area for Sandro to steal in at the far post and head home.

GB might have equalised in the 15th minute, but for Thiago Silva being perfectly placed to clear off the line after Micah Richards met Ryan Giggs’s far-post  free-kick with a goalbound header.

Pleasing on the eye as they are, there is a darker side to Brazilian football that presented itself in the 32nd minute, as Neymar crashed to the ground in the area, trying to win a penalty. He may have lost his footing, but there was little to account for the way he remained flat out and began rubbing the back of his head after finally climbing to his feet.

The crowd left him in no doubt about what they felt, and the boos were still ringing out when Richards tripped Hulk from behind and Neymar stepped up to drill the 35th-minute penalty past Steele. There was a rebuke from the referee for the way he cupped his ears to the fans behind the goal, but he scarcely cared.

It underlined the showman in him, and it will doubtless be in evidence often enough over the next few weeks.

Brazil Show Britain Gold StandardTeam GB Women Hold Sweden

MIDDLESBROUGH, England, July 21, (Agencies): Neymar turned in a fine individual display by scoring one goal and setting up another as Brazil warmed up for the Olympics with a 2-0 victory over Britain on Friday.
The 20-year-old striker whipped in a free kick for Sandro to head the gold medal favorites in front in the 12th minute.
Neymar got on the scoresheet himself in the 35th with a penalty after Hulk was tripped by Britain defender Micah Richards.
The British rarely looked capable of scoring as they were outclassed ahead of their first appearance in the Olympics since 1960.
Britain started with Daniel Sturridge playing as a lone striker as he attempted to prove his match fitness after a bout of viral meningitis.
But they relied on goalkeepers Jason Steele and Jack Butland, who each played a half, to ensure Brazil didn’t leave the Riverside Stadium with a bigger victory.

Leandro Damiao, supported by Oscar, Neymar and Hulk tormented England’s back four from the start.
But the hosts could have leveled after Sandro’s opener. Richards met Ryan Giggs’ free kick beyond the far post, although defender Thiago Silva was on hand to clear a downward header.
After Neymar extended Brazil’s lead from the spot, the Santos star forced a save from Steele at his near post and saw a long-range effort deflected over the bar.
After the break, Butland was forced to save from Oscar and Damiao in quick succession with his defense offering little protection.
There was a glimmer of hope for Britain when Danny Rose crossed to Craig Bellamy, but the Welsh forward’s effort was denied by a point-blank save.
There was a lively finale, with Butland making a one-handed save to block Neymar’s shot towards the bottom corner and then palming Alexandre Pato’s header over the crossbar. Britain has not fielded an Olympic team since the 1960 Games in Rome because football federations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland feared losing their independence within FIFA.

The world body assured the football associations their status won’t be affected by participating in the 16-team competition as the Olympics return to London for the first time since 1948. There are no players from Scotland or Northern Ireland in the squad, with only England and Wales represented.
In Middlesbrough, England, Britain’s women’s soccer team, who take part in the first event of the Olympic Games when they play New Zealand in Cardiff next Wednesday, drew 0-0 with Sweden in their first official match at the Riverside Stadium on Friday.
The game, the first half of a double-header with the men’s Olympic team due to play Brazil later, was full of fine technical play from two evenly matched teams making their final preparations in a low-key encounter before the start of the soccer tournament next week.
The British team, whose only other match was a behind closed doors training game which ended in a 3-1 win over South Africa this month, came closest to a goal when Rachel Yankey, making her 120th appearance for England as a second half substitute, hit a post with a well-taken left-foot shot after 70 minutes.

Sweden, who finished third in last year’s women’s World Cup and are fourth in FIFA’s world rankings threatened several times and Sofia Jakobsson, who plays professionally in Russia, wasted a good scoring chance just before halftime.
Caroline Seger, winning her 93rd cap for Sweden, had her side’s two best scoring chances, but failed to take either.
The two sets of players will be seeing plenty of each other over the next few weeks, whether they meet in the later stages of the Games or not as they are sharing the same accomodation block in the Olympic Village.
Britain, taking part in the Olympics for the first time, face Cameroon and gold medal favourites Brazil in their opening group matches, while Sweden are grouped with world champions Japan, Canada and South Africa, their first opponents in Coventry next Wednesday.
The soccer tournament traditionally starts before the opening ceremony to accommodate the competition programme which features 16 men’s teams and 12 womens.

Neymar Expects Brazil to Capture First Soccer Gold

The Canadian Press

MIDDLESBROUGH, England – Striker Neymar feels Brazil’s national Olympic side could make no better statement ahead of hosting the 2014 World Cup than by winning gold for the first time in the country’s history.

Despite lifting the World Cup on five occasions, Olympic gold has eluded the Brazilian football side.

“Winning this tournament would show that we are on the right track for winning the 2014 World Cup,” Neymar said.

“There is a great expectation at home for us to win the gold medal,” the budding star said. “It is very important because we have never won Olympic gold before so now we have a chance to make history.”

The 20-year-old Neymar, who is the leading scorer at Santos, has been repeatedly linked with a move away from his homeland to a European club.

“My wish today is to stay at Santos, and I am very happy,” Neymar said. “It is my dream to play in Europe one day, but not now.”

Brazil, drawn in Group C alongside Egypt, Belarus and New Zealand, face the British side in a friendly on Friday.

Neymar expressed his disappointment that David Beckham was not selected for the British team for the London games.

“I was sad because he is a great player, so I would have liked to have played against him one time. It would have been something I could have told my children.”

Neymar:Cristiano Ronaldo is really good as well, and I enjoy watching Ozil of Germany a lot, too

Brazil star Neymar has praised Andres Iniesta’s ‘sensational’ performances for Spain at Euro 2012.

The Barca and Spain midfielder was in masterful form for the European champions as they successfully defended their Euro 2008 crown. And Neymar believes Iniesta is one of the best players in the world, alongside Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Santos star was speaking to FIFA.com, and revealed he particularly enjoyed watching Ronaldo and Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil – both Real Madrid players – and Barca ace Iniesta.

The Brazil forward is set to lead the line for his country at the London Olympics, and the 20-year-old is confident his side can bring home Brazil’s first ever Olympic football gold medal.

But the Santos striker admits Spain were a joy to watch at Euro 2012, and even joked that they might become tired of winning every trophy in sight.

“The Spanish are going to finish with the game at this rate,” said Neymar. “They really are the best side. The technical standard [of Euro 2012] was very high, just as high as the World Cup. And all that was missing were teams like Brazil and Argentina.”

Neymar was in action earlier this week as Santos took on Gremio, but the young starlet got in trouble for a blatant dive mid-way through the second half. Gremio defender Werley lunges in, and doesn’t make contact with Neymar, but the Santos star makes sure he still gets a few rolls in, while the exasperated defender picks up a booking!

Tom Daley better watch out this summer, on this form Neymar looks like he could be giving the British hopeful a run for his money in the London pool!

Neymar: Beckham should have been selected

BRAZILIAN strike sensation Neymar claims his side’s prospects in tonight’s Olympic warm-up game have been enhanced by Stuart Pearce’s refusal to select David Beckham for Team GB.

Brazil take on Great Britain at the Riverside as both sides complete their preparations for the men’s Olympic football tournament, which begins next Thursday.

Earlier in the year, it had been expected that Beckham would be leading Team GB, but Pearce instead opted to name Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards as his over-age players, something Neymar feels has played into Brazilian hands.

“When Beckham was not selected, I was a little happy and a little sad,” said the Santos striker, who is expected to play on the left of a three-pronged Brazil attack this evening. “I was happy because he will not be competing against us so it is a little less complicated for us.

“But I was sad because he is a great player, so I would have liked to have played against him one time. It would have been something I could have told my children.”

Brazil will kick off the Olympic football tournament as favourites to win the gold medal, the one major prize in the world game that has eluded them in the past.

“There is a great expectation at home for us to win the gold medal,” said Neymar. “It is very important because we have never won Olympic gold before so now we have a chance to make history.

“And winning this tournament would show that we are on the right track for winning the 2014 World Cup (in Brazil).”

You’ve got to feel sorry for Gremio’s Werley.

On Sunday night Gremio lost 4-2 away at Santos after the hosts closed out the match having gone 4-up by the 70th minute.

Gremio were largely outplayed during those opening 70 minutes, but they were also battling against the referee who made a horrible decision in the 68th minute when starlet Neymar went down as if he’d been shot.

Neymar, who had bagged Santos’ third goal with a header, broke down the left hand side midway through the second half after robbing Werley of possession. The Gremio defender came snapping back at Neymar, and the result was that the Brazilian upstart was left clutching his leg on the touchline.

Only there was one problem with Neymar’s injury. Werley never kicked him.

Instead Neymar faked the injury, and Gremio were served with a double whammy as Felipe Anderson went on to curl the resulting free-kick into the back of the net.

Watch Neymar faking it below.
